Kaitiaki
The heart of our communities

Meet the Kaitiaki
Kaitiaki are Te Toi Mahana tenants who volunteer their time to build a sense of belonging and connection among the Te Toi Mahana community in Pōneke, Wellington.
There are currently around 50 Kaitaiki who support a range of community initiatives - from managing community spaces and gardens to organising events and activities.
The group is supported by Te Toi Mahana staff who are guided by the Kaitiaki in what works best to support their own communities. Kaitiaki receive induction training and adhere to a Code of Conduct.

Community Engagement
in Action

The diversity of our tenant community across Pōneke means that no two communities are alike. Many Kaitiaki lead activities like social cuppa groups, food distributions, sewing groups and Tai Chi sessions. Other kaitaiki coordinate community room bookings in rooms across the city that are used by tenants (for private groups such as birthday parties and Eid celebrations) and by community organisations (for running activities like mental health groups and computer courses). The range and diversity of activities is always changing and growing.
Across all Te Toi Mahana locations there are around:
-
45 regular activities in our community spaces (most are held weekly)
-
20 active community groups and organisations
-
14 thriving community gardens

Communities in Action Fund
To overcome some of the cost barriers to community-building, we offer the Communities In Action Fund. This fund provides up to $3000 in seed funding for a tenant-led or tenant-partnered project. With an accessible two-page application process and support from our team to get the new group started, tenants are able to bring their own ideas to life and enhance community engagement.
